Does it matter how you look (facially) or how you dress in the legal profession?

I am increasingly worried about the fact that looks are a factor in the professional world.
It completely invalidates those poor, unattractive smart girls who spent hours studying only to find out they are worthless everywhere.
I'm fairly average-looking facially, but I do dress well.

In theory, it shouldn't matter if you're ugly or gorgeous. However, in real life, people TEND to think more highly of attractive individuals. Some studies have shown that people of above-average looks earn as much as 15% more than people in the same field with below-average looks!
While law firms do value your ability and education highly, and you won't even get a second look at most of the big firms unless you have sterling academic credentials, they probably do give at least a slight preference to the more attractive of two equally impressive candidates.
As to clothes, it really does matter. For interviews and for court appearances, you must dress professionally. If you're in doubt about something (like open-toed shoes for women), go with a more conservative option. The legal profession is still pretty stodgy, and although judges probably won't tell you to go home and change, they will notice if you are not dressed the way THEY think you should dress.
Many firms now have a casual dress-code. Even so, dress at the higher end of the casual spectrum. If your boss wears Birkenstocks and ripped cargo shorts, this does NOT give you license to do the same, especially if you're low on the attorney totem pole. A partner with 30 years of experience can wear what he likes. So can you, when you make partner and have 30 years of experience. Always wear something that you would not be ashamed to make an emergency client visit or court appearance in, or at least keep a nice blazer and a pair of decent shoes (AND hose, for female lawyers!) in your office. |

I think they are equally important, looks and clothing. Dressing nicely and professionally though will really help. And I am sure you are not as average looking as you think : ) |

I think that a first impression is very important and your looks have everything to do with that. If you don't look professional in the interview or on the first day of work then that's a sign that you are not professional at all. I work for a school and I have to admit sometimes I don't dress professional and I have noticed that the people around me who do dress professional are more likely to get promotions and raises. So do what it is you do but look professional no matter what at your job. |

Unfortunately, looks will always be a factor, even though, technically, it's against the law to not hire someone based on their looks. |
