Does it matter what law school you go to?
Find answers to your legal question.

Does it matter what law school you go to?

I know that how much a lawyer gets paid depends on a some different factors but I'm not going to get into that because all lawyers start out at a very nice salary and could make well over that.

However, if I wanted to make 500k a year as a lawyer, what type of law would I go into. I UNDERSTAND YOU DO NOT START OUT MAKING THIS MUCH. Thats obvious, but you must be able to work you way up, right?

Here is the question I am concerned with:

Do you need to go to a "top" law school in order to make this kind of money? It doesn't seem like it because I know a few lawyers and they are NOT in what would be called the "high paying legal specialties" and they make A LOT. None of them went to top 50 or ivy league schools for UG OR LAW school. Can you really make as much as you want (I'm not talking 10M a year here guys) if you put the time and effort in?

I am not worried too much about Undergrad because I know I can get into a good one and law school is not very competitive but its not easy to get into. Med school is by far more difficult to get into.

So, do I have to go to Harvard or what?

There are WAY TOO MANY attorneys right now - a glut. Even IF you do make it through law school, you probably won't be able to find a job (in the legal field) when you are done. There are just way too many lawyers right now. BUT the law schools won't tell you this - law students are easy money for them.

Suggestion: Go into the field of Healthcare << LOTS of good jobs there - even with your background.

I depends on what type of law you want to practice to make your big money.

For example, I imagine the attorneys you mention that make "A LOT" and did not go to top schools probably practice in a plaintiff's litigation area such as personal injury or products liability. Their money comes from big jury awards and/or settlements with corporations and insurance companies. Most of these attorneys have their own practices so it doesn't matter where they went to school.

If you want to go up the ladder in a big money law firm, you will need to go to a good school or get extremely good grades at a not so good school. Entry level lawyers at big firms in big markets are starting at about $165,000 right now, but you need excellent credentials to get those jobs. You could easily make $500,000 as a partner or senior associate in 5-8 years.

Hope this helps!

You need to go to the best school that supports your goals. If that's Harvard, great. If it's UNC, so be it. You need to decide what track you want to take and do research on what schools prepare you the best for your chosen specialty. If you can't figure out what type of law you want to practice, then choose the best school with a variety of options - and figure it out in undergrad. There are people who went to great schools that you and I have never heard of who do very, very well. If you are looking for the legacy route, then choose a school that has legacy ties to the companies/firms/organizations you want to work with.
