I have a summer job. During orientation one of the managers wrote my pay rate down on a piece of paper. It was 8.00/hr. The paychecks I've been getting back have said 7.50/hr. Even if I had kept the paper I don't think it would have been proof enough that it was him who wrote it. And no, no contract was signed between us on the pay I was to receive (It's a cashier job, nothing too serious). Also, please note if you have any legal or financial credentials on this topic, thanks.

P.S. I did talk to the manager and he said he'd get back with me but never did. This happened to me before at Dairy Queen too(hint for anyone wanting to work there). So now I'm wondering, if I really can't prove anything, should I start asking for contracts from these jobs, even though they're small-time, crappy jobs (P.P.S. I'm in college so hopefully I won't be working with dishonest people like this once I graduate.)

As you already know ... you have no recourse. The managers know this, they know it's just a summer job for you, so you won't keep fighting it. You could mention it again in front of another manager. Managers have budgets and bottom lines (which is why they don't want anyone to get overtime), so if they can shave $.50 a hour off you, it helps them. After you graduate ... get all offers in writing. |

sounds like you got a bad deal hun, sorry to hear it, but i honestly don't think there is much you can do, just learn from your mistakes, is all, word of mouth it sounds like to me, and its how it ends up most of the time .... wish i was more help |

Always get it writing...even if it's simply a company-form job description with duties and pay rate listed. He said-she said only causes confusion and bad press (obviously). |

You have to legal recourse to get the $8 an hour. Even if you could prove that was the initial offer, they can reduce your pay rate legally so it wouldn't matter, as long as it's at least the minimum wage in your state. Your recourse it to find another job that pays more, and quit.
Forget asking for a contract for a part time summer job - isn't going to happen. |

First, those types of jobs NEVER give contracts. Asking would be a waste of time.
You're likely out of luck. As long as you make at least minimum wage the employer is free to pay you what he/she wishes. |
