Does this sound like discrimination?

I have been with a company for two years. The company has a high turnover rate and is known for its unfair practices, at least with the employees. Recently, two positions have come open for leads that I am very well qualified for. I did not get either position. After filling out and application and going to an interview with my supervisor, they gave one of the positions to someone from the outside, and the other from someone who did not have to fill out an application or go to an interview. During my interview my supervisor told me that he was concerned with me being too young and unable to handle the job and the other workers. I found this suspicious because they have promoted other who are just as young as me who had not been with the company for even three months. I think it is important to say that I am an African American female, and that there are no other African American leads at the company except one and he has just resigned. He also became lead before this supervisor came to the company. About a month ago my supervisor was accused of making racist remarks to another employee, also African American. He didn't even receive a warning. Does this sound like I am being discriminated against because of my race and/or age?

Does this sound like discrimination?
NO
age discrimination only relates to those 40 or older

race could be a possibility but i doubt it. from what you have stated race was not even a consideration.

the way you have handled being passed over for the promotion sort of proves the employer is right about your lack of maturity.
age and time on the job have nothing to do with the ability to be a part of management.
it is not a matter of being young but rather a matter not having the maturity to lead effectively or as effectively as the other applicants.

Oh man I love the victim mentality.

It does not seem like discrimination to me at all. Unfortunately despite your skills and qualifications they chose someone other than you. And in truth, sometimes you may think you're perfectly qualified for a position but they think otherwise. Lose the victim attitude and move on. It has nothing to do with your race or even your age.

Not your age - the only legally protected age is being over 40, so if you are under that, it's not illegal discrimination.

Your race - hard to tell.

Why not ask your boss what you'd have to do to be considered qualified for the next lead position that comes open - his or her answer might be an eye-opener.

I feel you and sometimes it does seem like some employers dont want to put a minority in charge, but it seems like the other person was qualified. If you are really fed up and feel like you are going nowhere in the company maybe you should venture out and look for companies that will appreciate your talents. You seem like a smart lady. Dont give anyone that much power over you where you even start to doubt yourself. Just go out and look for something else.
