Doing something not in job description?
|
Hi, I work at a retail store similar to walmart. My job is to do inventories and restock the shelves. The store has a separate receiving team, but sometimes I am told to unload the trucks. Can I refuse since that is not my job or in my job description?
Thanks,
Rob

YES and...
don't let the door hit you on the as* on your way out.
it does not matter if it is your job or not and if there is a job description or not. even if you had a written job description you must do as asked or suffer the consequences. failure to do as asked by management is insubordination (unless what they ask is illegal, immoral or unethical) |

of Course u have the right to refuse the order.
but you must understand of the bussiness situation if there was a peak seasons 'every one can do Everything".
So my suggestions is "Be flexible Buddy" |

Every job description has an item, either stated or implied, that basically says "and whatever else the employer needs for you to do that you are able to do". So if you want to keep your job, do what you are told to do. |

Sure if you want to lose your job.
You pretty much do what your boss asks you to do.
Also, if you never step outside your job description, then you will never get a better position. You have to prove that you can do other jobs duties to advance. |

I would assume since you work at Wal Mart they have that "Other Duties as Assigned" part stuck in there some where. It is always good to show initiative and go above & beyond in order to advance up the career ladder. Even if Wal-Mart is not the job you want to be your career, if you show initiative, not only will it look good on a resume, but your supervisor might give you a glowing recommendation! |

If your job is union check with the union contract. Every job that I have ever seen has a do other duties as assigned. So, since it doesn't specifically say unload trucks, it is still part of your job description because it falls under the other duties as assigned. If you refuse it could be viewed as insubordination and you could be fired for it. |
