Employed for less than a year, informed HR of absence, is it still AWOL?

my sister has been employed in this company for less than a year. her status is contractual, and she has no leave credits yet. she went to our province for the holy week on holy tuesday, which is still a working day, because there will be no more trips to our province on maundy thursday. she informed the HR of her absence via a text message, but when she returned to work the following week she was issued a memo stating that she was on AWOL.
any advice to say otherwise? thanks

Just a few questions first....
Which country/emirate is your sister employed in?
How long, exactly, has she been employed there?
These 2 questions will assist in determining if she actually DID have leave days available.
Was she given any leave time to make this trip, or, did she simply not arrive at work, and then (worse) send a text message?
AWOL = Absence without leave. So, if she had not obtained approval, she was absent without leave. The issue here is more around how this is registered, (unpaid leave day = 1 day less in End of Service Benefits calculated only on actual days worked, not duration from start to end of employment. |
