Employee Performance Monitoring by CCTV. Is this legal?

Employee Performance Monitoring by CCTV. Is this legal?

My employer is currently in the process of having a CCTV system installed. We the employees have been informed that the system is going to be installed to make sure that we are working and doing our job, at our benches at the proper time etc. Is this type of CCTV employee monitoring allowed.
I would be most grateful for your reply.

It is legal to install CCTV but the company must have a written ompany policy regarding its use and what it stored information can be used for and you have a right to see that policy. If they have no policy that states the reasons for its implementation then your employers cannot use it to discipline the emplyees it must be a poorly run company if its managers can't manage and they have had to resort to this.
Read the data protection act that has some interesting reading about the use of CCTV cameras especially in workplaces.

The only place they can't film you is in the bathroom, a changing room, or somewhere where there is an implied right to privacy.

Think about it this way. Your boss has every right to check in on you to make sure you are working and there is no law or regulation that prevents him from using technology to do so.

Employers can and do monitor your phone usage, keystrokes-per-minute and websites visited, & have video cameras, especially overlooking tellers/cash registers, loading docks, parking lots/ramps, storerooms, public & employee entrances & reception areas, cafeteria/break room, and work areas. No cameras in restrooms or locker rooms if employees have to change clothes there. They are in locket rooms if employees store personal items but do not change clothes -- help prevent theft of employees' personal property.

You are on camera at intersections, most stores and fast food restaurants, shopping malls, parking lots, airports, train & subway stations, post offices, federal buildings & federal offices -- in short, you are under observation most of the time.

In the UK it is. A lot of shops have a camera over the till to stop stealing. The only place not allowed is in the toilets.

as far as i know yes, as we have the same in our place. it did grate for a couple of weeks but then you just start thinking of the sad tosser sat in front of the monitor for hours watching you. they will soon get bored with their new toy and ultimately there will be no benefit and no cctv system covers everywhere

Yes it is.
The company can monitor you at work in virtually anyway they choose.

UK- Yes it is allowed. Until recently I sold CCTV systems to businesses in the Uk, they must put up signs informing people they are being recorded, they can put them anywhere except inside the toilets.
