Employer cutting hours to force workers to leave

My friend recently got in touch with me. She currently works for a large retail chain as a visual merchandiser. She has informed me that the branch she works for is trying to lose staff members without making them redundant and paying them their redundancy packages. Instead, they have slashed the amount of hours to 8 hours each per week, knowing that those with bills and mortgages or rent to pay will have to leave to find another job. She's convinced they are not breaking the law and have merely found a loophole. I'm convinced that what they are doing is illegal and she has every right to seek legal advice. If it also helps, I don't know what her contracted hours are usually. I know that when she started she was on a zero hour contract HOWEVER this was altered after she was made to work ridiculous hours over Christmas. she has also been employed there for less than one year. I can find out from her what hours her contract states if it helps. Any help you could provide would be brilliant, Thank you
