Employer gave a bad recommendation..?

I worked for a small private business for over a year. The corrupt employer wasn't honest with his business conduct but there were never any problems between us. I was the highest paid employee at his business at that time, and i've always done my duties. I held on to the job because it's hard to find another one with this economy, but left as soon as i could. I took a break because of college, but i'm looking for a new job right now. Most places ask for previous employer information, so i wrote that i worked for that company. I got an interview, and was asked if i had any problems with my most recent employer. I said "no" but was asked twice if i was sure. Seemed suspicious, and I'm guessing the place where i'm applying contacted him. The previous employer even told me that he was very likely to say something negative about an employee; and i'm pretty sure he did. He's making me look bad, any advice on what i can do about this?

as long as what he said was truthful and can be proven then he can say what he wants, if he lied then you have recourse |
