Employer gives option to higher paid hourly emploee, accept big pay cut or 2 weeks notice for same job.?

This is a small doctor's office, poorly run and Dr. wife is part time employee. There is no such thing as a contract, employee manual or performance reviews or raises in this office. I've been there now going on 5 years. Legally speaking can they do this?

Yes the employer can do this...and unless you can think of a plan (like the first poster says - although I'm not sure what plan you think would work that wouldn't cost you money because I'm sure advertising is expensive), don't broach that subject.

He gave you an option - you can either take it or leave it. Accept the pay cut - and you'll still have an income - or you're fired in two weeks....I'm a bit surprised he gave you two weeks notice as most employers do not do that at all.

I would accept the pay cut and try to find another job ASAP. If he can't afford you at the reduced pay, you will be let go and he'll just have his wife do everything.

If you don't work full-time for him, you can always temp part-time.

Yes they can do this. If it were me, I would take the pay cut and immediately begin a job search. At least you would have some income while you look.

I don't see why they can't do this since you have no contract. It's his business no matter how poorly run you think it is. A pay cut sure beats losing your job, and it means you continue to get paid while you look for another job.
At least they gave you two options; they could have merely let you go.
Now if you think you can prove to them you can turn this around where this is not necessary - where he will earn all he wants and you can continue to earn what you do.
I'd suggest getting all this on paper - your plan, I mean.
Go to Doc and say I have a proposal that will alleviate the cash flow problems. You will be able in increase profits and continue paying your long term loyal employees the same wage (or more if you can make this happen).
Get him to agree to give you 6 months to try this if you think that is doable in 6 months - or ask for a year if you need that.
After he agrees in writing - which you, of course, have all drawn up. In the agreement you state that at the end of 1 year/6 months he will increase your pay by 10% or whatever you think is fair and will give you a cash bonus of $X - a % of the increased cash flow.
You have to be ready to face the music if you don't succeed with this plan so start saving your money to live on while you look for a job if necessary. You may also want to let this little plan leak out to other doctor offices as I bet there may be many who will admire your confidence and will be ready to hire you.
Now after, and only after, you have the agreement all signed and ready to go then show him the plan. My point is to be sure you are protected and he doesn't just take your plan and let his wife try to implement it.
Good luck.

Of course they can.

That is the marketplace at work. A business offers to pay the going rate, and labor either accepts the offer or looks elsewhere.

Accept pay cut while you look for another job. Don't quit until you find a job. If asked why you are leaving your employer, don't bad-mouth them.
