Employer hired me 2 months ago but hasn't let me start yet...?

i quit my job of 10 years w/ a large corporation b/c i was offered a job by a new company -- i was given a start date and was told what my salary would be. i quit my old job thinking i would start my new job the next week; however my new employer now keeps saying they are waiting for a contract to be signed so a position will come open for me. that has been 2 months ago.

is this legal on their part? when i was hired i was never told about a contract, i was just told to start on a certain day & i would have a certain salary. now the company *still* hasn't paid me or brought me in for work.

please help! what can i do?

if the offer is in writing about the start date and salary, you have a legal case to pursue.

you may sure for damages resulting loss of money from quiting the former job

OMg that is ridiculous, that is illegal i'm sorry comeon now.... that happened to my brother, but his job allowed him to come back... Is this private or government? if it's government you could go to the EEO about that...

If what you say is true then you need to get yourself an attorney because this is a "breech of a verbal contract."
You actually quit your job upon a verbal promise of a job, and even a start date! You should be entitled to the salary even if the position hasn't come up yet.

Maybe you could sue for back wages but how good would that be to work for that company after? Maybe you should find another job and then sue for lost wages.
