Is it legal for employers to set certain times of the month as off limits for taking any vacation time off? For example an employer setting the 24th through the end of each month (a quarter of the year) where no one is allowed to take vacation time.
Additional Details
The other problem is that the company deliberately understaffed to the point where only one person can take time off at any given time the month.

Yes they can. Legally, an employer doesn't have to give you any vacation time. Many employers will not allow vacation during times when they really need full staff. This is especially true in retail, when they need everyone there for big sales, holidays, etc.
They are free to do it, and you are free to find a job with a more reasonable vacation policy. |

If you're in the US, yes it's legal - the company is not required to give you vacation time, and if they do, can set the rules for taking it.
Laws in other countries might vary. |

Yes they can. Some companies see higher volume of business during certain times of the month or year, others have certain due dates for projects etc that could be arbitrary. They have the right to blackout whenever. Keep in mind, vacations are not one of the rights we have as workers. Lunches, overtime pay, yeah, but not vacations. The fact that they give you one at all is a privilege and if it's a paid one even more so. Be willing to bend so that your company won't suffer for giving you an added benefit. |
