I worked at a retail outlet over christmas which was quite disorganised and got cash in hand. Now i am trying to get housing benefits and job seekers, but i can't as my last employee never gave me a P45, although i have left them countless messages asking for at least a letter to prove that i am not working anymore but it has been over a month, and i can't live on nothing (they won't give me benefits without one). I didn't have a contract either.
Is it the law that I have to have a P45 or a form from them from them even though I only worker there a month and a half and got paid daily?

it is illegal to work cash in hand whether you have to pay tax or national insurance, everyone has to have a P45 then the tax office can work out your earnings properly, obviously your last employer hasn`t been booking your wage down so you won`t get a P45, hopefully you will have learnt by now no one can elude the tax man. You should have a P45 from your previous employer, you should keep these for 5 years, so give the benefits office that one. |

Contact your local HMRC office (used to be the inland revenue) Tell them where you worked and when and about how much you earned. As long as the employer has not been cheating the tax man, and they could have been, the HMRC will do a P45 for you. |
