How exactly do I prove it? SS card? Driver's license? What do employers want when they ask this question?

There is a list of acceptable documentation, but usually a social security card and driver's license will do it. You can also use a passport or military ID if you have these. |

A passport will prove it - they should ask you to complete a form called a I-9 which you should supply them with a passport or a combination of Driver's license and social security card or birth certificate. You have to supply two things - one is proof of identity - hence a government issued document with your picture and the other is - proof of authorization to work in the US - hence the birth certificate or SS card. The passport can act as both proofs. |

You prove employment authorization 2 ways:
1. If you are a U.S. born citizen, I would bring 3 proofs of I.D., birth certificate, drivers license, and SS Card.
2. If you are NOT a "born" citizen, bring your naturlization certificate, your visa (H1B - temp worker permit), Work Authorization Card, EAD Card, Proof you have residency here (and have maintained it if you have left the U.S. for more than 6 consecutive months).

I believe they're asking if you are a legal resident of the US.
Birth certificate or SS card should do it, OR a green card if you became a legal resident.
Also have your state id or drivers license with you too. |

If you are a US citizen then you just provide your ID and SS card, but if you are not a citizen or permanent resident then you should have an Employment Authorization card and an A#. |

They CANNOT ask you for specific documents. On the US I-9, there are catagories that the canidate can choose to present. You can submit one document from list A or one document from list B AND one from list C. It is ILLEGAL to ask for specific documents. |
