I am a shop manager, my job is at risk and my manager offers me less money for a sales assistant position, is it legal? can they pay me less? I know its less responsibilities but can they do that legally? I have been working there for 1year and half.

if your job is at risk you should be appreciative of the second chance to prove yourself and your worth to the employer.
as far as the legalities,
YES they can do this, the employer can cut your pay even if you were in the same position.
if your pay is cut you must be aware of the change prior to working at the new rate.
your job description/duties (and or pay) may be adjusted (up or down) at any time with or without consultation.
this is assuming you are in the US and........
not working under contract or a collective bargaining agreement that specifically addresses this issue. |

Yes, they can do this. It is a different position and really, it sounds like they are trying to give you another chance to learn. Perhaps you just weren't ready to be a shop manager?
If you ego will allow it, and you enjoy the working environment, try it. If you hate it, find another position that you will enjoy more.

yes, in most states they can. it's your choice whether to stay or not. |

Absolutely legal. In fact they can lower your pay at your current position as long as they give you notice. Your length of employment makes not difference.
Tough economical times are forcing a lot of employers to do such things. A lower paying job is better than no job. |

michr got it right again. Yeah, they can do it (in the US) unless there's an employment contract which specifies otherwise, or unless it's illegal retaliation (e.g. you reported your employer for wage and hour violations and they did this to you as revenge). |
