Employment law - education - being told i have to reapply for my own job WHILE IN A CANTEEN?

is there anywhere in law, education employment to be precise, that states discussions about contracs etc have to be done in private - or do i have some sort of case regarding privacy?
I was informed in a public area with students walking about, verbaly, and have received nothing in writing. Ideas anyone?
