Employment law regarding dismissal?

i've just been fired from my job, on the basis that another employee said that i made a derogatory comment about the company in front of a customer.
now this apparently happened several weeks ago, but they dont know an exact date, there wasnt any other witnesses and they dont know who the customer was.
is this legal or can i appeal this? its come right out of the blue, i dont recall ever saying this and have no idea how i was meant to form any sort of a defence when no one knows when it happened or who was there!!
please help!

If you are hired "at will", the company can separate with you for ANY reason and you cannot fight back.

Sounds like they have had it with you. You have no case, employment at will states that the company or employee can terminate the relationship at any time without notice.

You were terminated for Gross Misconduct. The reason why it took them several weeks to do it is that they were investigating it and have all there documentation in a row if challenged.

Are you a member of a UNION, if you are they will help you with what needs to be done, if not? You should seek legal advice about this? Go to your local Citizen Advice Bureau. good luck!

UK- contact ACAS at www,acas.co.uk they will be able to help you free of charge. The company need proof you said it and must have put it in the complaints book at the time with someone else signing as witness and then give you a verbal warning also entered in a book.

well i defo think that,is unfair dismissal and you could take them to court because there is no witness only hear say and they cant judge you on this hope this helps.

It would come under the heading of Gross misconduct which warrants an immediate sacking.
I would hazard there is a bit more to this than just that though as no company would do this without further proof.

You could certainly appeal it as it seems to be your word against that of another employee.

Check with your local CAB office.

If you are in the US and not in Montana, you are an employee at will and they could fire you for any reason or no reason, they don't need dates and witnesses. Sorry.

Your only real recourse is to protest to your employer that this never happened. But they get to make the decision on whether or not to fire you.
