I work at a banquet center and sometimes myself and my other co workers are told to punch out because we are not allowed in the room that we are working in for a certain period of time.. then soon enough we are told to punch back in. Sometimes we do this more than once in the same day. Is this legal? Shouldn't we be getting payed for the entire time we are there?

Can't say with too much certainty but it definitely sounds illegal. Why would you have to punch out? You might want to contact your state attorney general or labor board and ask about that. |

That is definitely illegal...but if just one of you tries to talk to the boss about this, expect to get fired. If all of you band together, and confront the boss and threaten to all walk out unless you are paid for the full time you are there, you might be able to get this changed.
The banquet center is being paid for the full time the event is going on, and they shouldn't try and stiff you.
I am a radio personality, and that would be like my company telling me that I had to clock out when the commercials were on my program because I wasn't talking...totally absurd!
Do yourself a favor, though, and find another job. I am sure there are many places that could use your good skills and pay you better. Larger hotels, like Marriott, host big events and don't have such shoddy practices towards their employees.

Yes, that is illegal. If you are required to be there, ie wait to clock back in, they need to pay you the entire time.
In some sates, they even need to pay you for the time it takes to dress and undress from uniforms. |
