Employment / redundancy question- please advise?

I PA to the Managing Director of a large company in London. The MD has just been made redundant but the company wont give me redundancy as they have offered me another role within the business, however this is PA-ing to a much lower person. Can they do this? Can they refuse me redundancy because I dont think its fair that I signed up to PA to the MD and now I either have to take the role of PA to a head of department or leave and find another job. Can someone please advise? Thanks
Additional Details
The pay will be the same but thats not what bothers me- it took me a long time to get to this position (I know its just a PA role) and Im not happy about going from the most senior PA within the company to a lower position

Yes they can do this. When a position becomes redundant they are legally bound to offer you a different position within the company at the same pay rate.

As well, some companies have it noted in their policies that the employee would be offered an opportunity to receive training or retraining for a different position.

seek legal advice buy they are probably able to offer you another posistion even on another payscale

As long as they are offering suitable alternative employment then they can not offer you a redundancy package.

I know you don't want to hear this, but yes, they can do this. You may want to consider finding other employment if you want to retain your "higher" position.

the only thing they cant do is reduce your wages, regardless if it's a lesser position they are offering you

You have an easier job for the same money! Be thankful!

Just be thankful that you are being paid the same for this lowly position. As the old MD has been made redundant then they will not be in a position to fill that post for 6 months minimum. If he had virtually got the push then ask if you can work for the new MD. If this fails then suggest you get looking for a new job at a more worthy level while you can still say that the you are a PA to a managing director. It could be that this person you are to be working with at this lowly level is to be groomed as the next MD in 6 months time.
