Fiancée can't find a job as a administrative assistant. What can she do?
|
My fiancée has been looking for work as an administrative assistant for over a year and has not been able to land anything. She landed 3 jobs that were somewhat like administrative type work, but she was fired from all of them. Each of the jobs said that she was not picking it up fast enough. She has an A.S. degree in computers. Since her last firing which was 2 months ago, she has probably sent out about 300 resumes. She gets called in for interviews but lands nothing. I told her that perhaps she should go into another line of work. Still use her computer skills, but apply them to a different line of work in the computer field. She refuses. All she wants is be an administrative assistant. She maintains that she's doing every thing humanly possible to find work and that there is nothing more that can be done. Is the office work field so over saturated with people that it's just too much competition? What can she do to help herself? Should she consider another line of work?

She needs to go to a career counselor. They are usually available through county employment offices. It sounds like she needs help with her resume, her interview skills, and her employment habits. It's not a good sign that she can't hold onto a job. She needs to get some specific feedback from her previous employers about what went wrong and try to work on that. In the meantime, she should try registering with a temp agency. Sometimes they even help with computer training and job skills, to help maximize the employees potential job matches. |

She got fired on all jobs. The problem is not she can't find work, the problem is your fiancee's personality, attitude, aptitute, etc. She needs to take a good look at herself to see how she can improve herself. |

If it's taking her that long, it's time for a job switch, which still utilizes her comp skills. |

From what this sounds, it seems your fiancee is not a good enough administrative assistant and needs to focus her abilities on other ways of earning a living. Word of caution to you: be very careful and weigh your options before getting married. If you need her financial contribution in your marriage, better make sure she has, and can hold, a job before deciding to make the final step. Otherwise, she becomes a non-contributing factor in your life, at least financially. |

What does she believe she has to offer to a prospective employer?...specifically what in an administrative assistant's role does she believe she has a particular facility or special skill? If she can't answer these questions then she will find it hard to find a position given her employment history so far. She may be over-skilled and appear 'critical' or she may really lack other skills that relate to working in a particular environment. She could do voluntary work whilst applying for other positions and get some feedback about her actual on the job performance. |

She's been fired from the last 3 jobs as an administrative assistant. When will she get the hint? (She can't even get decent references because of the 3 firings!)
Don't pay her way for anything. Make her sink or swim.
Do you really want to be with a stubborn mooch for your life long partner?? |

There are plenty of temp agencies out there that will put her into offices, a lot of times they end up being permanent positions. |

If she has been fired from three jobs in the past year she is obviously doing something wrong. She needs to broaden her net of job opportunities if she is ever going to find anything. Tell her to go to a temp service. They are great about placing people right away in different kinds of jobs. Sounds like she is completely mooching off of you and you're letting her. She needs to get off the couch and get a job. They are out there. |

Never Give Up on your dreams.
It make take years. (It took me 10 years to get into my dream job).
Be patient. You can always do temp work, and get the experience - then once you are more experienced, start looking for the Executive A.A. jobs (where the money starts gettting substantial). |
