Fired but didn't sign anything?

I was recently fired from my job, am I required to sign something?
Additional Details
I am just reading in the handbook now and it says "The manager will verify that all the issues were addressed and will have the exiting employee acknowledge in writing as such"

No. I think you should only have to return any employer-issed items, such as a uniform, before they will give you your last paycheck.

You do not have to sign anything. The reason they want you to sign is so that they have proof that the conversation took place and that you understood what was happening.

As a manager, I generally had another manager present if the employee refused to sign the documentation. I would review the conversation, get the employee to verbally agree to what was said. Then the other manager would sign as a witness.

Incidentally, I was always amazed that employees refused to sign the documents but did not say why. If you disagree with what is being said, you could ask for time to prepare your rebuttal. You should tell them they do not know your side of the story and then tell them without whining that you have been treated unfairly or dissing your boss. If you have witnesses or other documentation that your story is accurate, provide it.
If you do not disagree with the document, why would you refuse to sign?

Most important, you have to listen to what is being said. You cannot let your emotions block out the reasons for the termination. You need to be professional in a very difficult situation. Most people are not fired without warning. What did you do about the warning? Did you improve? Did you find out exactly what they expected and do that or did you do your version of improving?

Wondering Mind
no only if the company requires it

You do not have to sign anything if your fired unless you want to. It sounds like the section you read probably applies to write-ups or disciplinary action while you are still employed.

Mel
That depends on the company - each one has different requirements with respect to terminating someone's employment.
