Fired...is there anything we can do?

My husband started working for a roofing company about a week ago. He has never done roofing before and they knew this. He went in today for his 5th shift, worked 14 hours out in the rain to go back to the yard at the end of the day and be told he is fired because the foreman he worked with on the first shift said he was holding up the crew and asking too many questions. This was his first day and as I said...no experience doing the job. They kept him working today because they were short on people then let him go once the job was done. The funny thing is the guy who fired him said if he wanted to go work for another company roofing they would give him a good reference. I am wondering if there is anything he can do or is he screwed because its within the 3 months probation?

there is no other job at another roofing company. if he applies to one and gets an interview apparently they will give him a reference but there is no other job lined up for him

Usually when you are still in probation, you can be let go any time the employer wishes, for any reason or no reason. That's what probation means.

Sorry to say it, but you're basically SOL on this one. Tell your husband to take the job at the other roofing company.
