I was working at my job for 6 months and was fired without notice recently. I signed a contract when I started stating there was a 3 month probation period and I could be let go without notice at any time during that period. It does not say what will happen after the 3 months. I was also not given any type of severance pay, just basically tossed out on my behind. Should I have been given some sort of notice? If they wanted me to leave immediately shouldn't I have been given a 2 weeks severance pay to cover the lack of notice? Oh and I am in Ontario in case that matters.

Well, typically when an institution hires someone, it's usually under the whole "terminated without notice or reason" clause. Basically, the company reserves the right to fire without notice or severance for whatever reason they'd like. It's not surprising at all that you were not given severance in this situation. More often than not, a company gives severance to people they feel will be a treat to the company after termination. If they felt that you would have a case to make a claim or that you could retalliate in some way, they would have offered something. Everyone is expendable and easily replaceable in the eyes of a CEO. |
