Getting a bad reference from former employer?

I worked for a state school that was very prestigious. My work speaks for itself. But I let them know how I felt on the last day do to workplace harassment I was the victim of.

I don't think they would give me a bad reference. But given the sleazy nature of human beings I wouldn't put it past them. However, I still choose to think positive.

Is there any legal recourse, say a cease and desist letter from a lawyer I can get to make sure they don't give me a negative reference?

Is there anyway I can make sure they don't give me an negative reference? Should I call? I'd be too uncomfortable to call. Any suggestions?

former employers are being directed to give only the start and end dates of a persons employment because even if they give a good reference and for some reason from that reference you are not hired you could have legal recourse.

You can't send a cease and desist letter out unless there is something to cease. Move on

there is no law against giving truthful references, some may decline and that is there choice, as long as it is truthful good or bad it can be given

For someone that worked at a "prestigious" school, you aren't very articulate...

Also, "letting them know how you felt" on the last day of work is just asking for a bad reference.

Most places are very careful about what they say in references, because they know they can be sued for making negative statements.

To see what they might say, have a couple of friends pose as prospective employers and call them.

That's what happens when you feel you have to have the last word on your way out the door. I doubt they'll give you a bad reference - references now are pretty much limited to whether you did in fact work there, your employment dates, usually you can get them to CONFIRM your salary (I don't think they offer that info anymore), and would you be eligible for re-hire (that could be a tricky question). They can find out what they really need to know thorugh a regular background check. But because of how lawsuit crazy we human beings are now, very rarely will you hear about someone getting a bad reference. Let this be a lesson to you though, never burn any bridges - you never know when you'll need a former employer again - possibly even for a job! Had you just been quiet and left when your day was over, you wouldn't even have to ask this question!
