Getting caught using the net at work!?

I was on holiday last week & came back to my boss showing my his evidence of me using the net with all the times I logged in & all the YA questions I answered came up, I was so embarrassed & thought he was gonna sack me he didn't thank goodness but I def wont ever go on at work again!!. I think a work colleague might have shown him but I don't have proof it was here grassing on me. Has this happened to anyone else & is using the net at work a sack-able offence or does it depend on what you was doing on the net?.

Unless you are on your lunch or one of your breaks you should not be surfing the internet. You are getting paid to do a job, not play on the computer.

You are lucky you didn't get fired. When you surf the internet for your own personal use/entertainment on company time you are technically "stealing time" from your employer because you are not performing your job duties.

You may not have been blown in by someone, my employer has software that tracks all internet & phone (incoming & outgoing). Most likely you were caught that way, but if you did get blown in by another employee did you ever think that someone may be tired of picking up your slack because of your irresponsible behavior at work?

It can be sackable after a warning. At the risk of being old fashioned, I do not pay my staff good money to have them wasting time on the Internet. If they have that much time to spare, obviously they do not have enough work, so out the door you go.
Sorry, but try to look at the employers point of view.

I have conducted several disciplinary hearings for misuse of the Internet. If you are meant to be working it doesn't matter what you are looking at but you shouldn't be.

Quite a few people do get dismissed for it but only when they do it repeatedly, if you stop now you'll be ok

I got in trouble too, they just said dont do it anymore. its a sackable offence if they give you a written warning, and you continue to do it. id slow down on the internet usage!!

Have you signed a usage policy? This should also state the rights of the company to monitor your access - this might either be part of your employment contract or a separate policy document. This policy should clearly state whether or not you are allowed to use the internet at work for private use. If you are not allowed to use for personal use, it should advise you of the consequences etc.

If you are employed "at will", you can be fired for any reason except for those considered discrimination. If you have a contract then there should be a clause about internet usage. If you are using company computers it is not hard for them to track there usage.

I think you should have been sacked for misconduct. YA is for ppl to play with at home not at there workplace. You are paid to do a job not mess around during working hours, and it is annoying when there are so many unable to get jobs coz vacencies are blocked by ppl who dont do there duties responsibly.

Yes, it most certainly could be a sacking offence.
The vast majority of companies monitor internet usage.
It could be that the IT department produce a listing of those using the web for non-business related stuff and that is how he found out.

Simple answer - do your work and don't waste time at work on YA and the like.

It is definitely a sackable offense. Not only are you using your employer's computer you are wasting the money they are paying you to work. Don't be so sure someone turned you in, employers keep track of what sites there employees use. Are you at work now?

I got a verbal warning for it. I don't think its sackable unless its in your contract or you are doing something illegal.

Hi everyone, I have an internet connection in the office but then i surf other sites which is nor work related. when I just got home, my trusted officemate texted me that the personal inspector of IT department and an Attorney is been there on my work station. would someone help me to do apologize letter or an appeal on that incident? Thank you

My partner has just been suspended from work until further notice for sending and receiving to many emails (not jokes or rude ones just two liners to me) he is waiting the outcome Im hoping he'll just get a written/verbal warning and not be sacked
