Going into law...?
|
I'm a freshman in high school, and I'm considering going into law. What's a good way to find out more about that profession? And what are some good law schools? Thanks.

Talk to the professionals in the field, but know that I am one and I could possibly save you a few trips and tens of thousands of dollars. Only 5 percent of the lawyers are the ones making the dough. The other 95 belong to the debtor or middle class. Once upon a time, it was a prestigious profession that promised financial security but it's not that way anymore. The law is a cutthroat, elitist business. If nothing else discourages you from entering the law, consider the large amount of student loan debt you will incur by going to law school. You'll spend half your lifetime trying to pay it back.
To your second question, the good law schools are the ones in the top 14 of US News and World Report. |

During the summer, try to get a summer job at a law firm. It helps if you know how to type or do receptionist work. If you have friends that work at law firms ask them to let you know when their office starts to hire summer temps. |

Go to the American Bar Association website at
http://www.abanet.org/legaled.html They have lots on the profession and legal education requirements.
As for good law schools, it depends on what you can afford and what you want to do. There is a tier system where certain law schools, like the Harvard, Yale type are rated higher. Their graduates, who are at the very, very top of the class make 6-figure salaries. If you have excellent grades in high school and college, and can afford to go to one of these top schools -- go for it. However, if you are like the rest of us you may want to look at a law school that is close to home (reduces living expenses), one that is connected to your undergrad college (you get some benefits for having gone to the college), or a law school that claims they graduate a certain type of lawyer (litigator, politician, judge).
Good luck. |
