Good reference after resignation, is it possible to get one?

Hello there...just a quick question: can I get a good reference from my previous employer who forced me to resign due to lack of trust (irregular lunch times)? Although, I haven't been performing very well since I started this job last yr, my manager said to me that my last task was "actually very good"? According to colleagues, they don't give any.
Any ideas? What is the law about this? Thanks. Carlita

Hi Carla,
There is a common myth that companies cannot give anybody a "bad" reference. This is misleading. They can say things that might affect your chances, but these things MUST be the truth and they must be able to prove them.
Some companies just give basic "tombstone" references which say that a person worked for them from (date) to (date) and what they were employed as - and that's all they say.
If your employer can ask you to resign for something as nebulous as "irregular" lunchtimes then I would suggest you are better off with the "tombstone" reference as, whilst that doesn't tell prospective employers much, at least it won't ruin your chances.
Sounds like you're better off out of it. I hope you have a better employer in your next job.

They can say, or not say, whatever they want to that's true. They can tell a prospective employer that the last task you did was very good, or can say that overall your performance wasn't good.
Forced to resign..... lack of trust.... irregular lunch times? What was that all about?
There is not law that they HAVE to give any reference. |
