Gross misconduct? Is it or not - throwing a 'sickie'?

I phoned in sick the other day from work cos I had a job on for a mate (same type of job). Merrily working away with my mate, but the boss saw me. He's not impressed, said it's gross misconduct, working for a competitor.
What can I do?

its not throwing a sickie though is it, you were lying and working for someone else. It is gross misconduct. You could get sacked. You will have to seriously apologise and kiss *** to get back in the good books.

From your Bosses point of view
1. You have told a deliberate lie by saying you 'incapacitated' on medical grounds.
2. You have demonstrated a lack of personal judgement / breach of Employer confidence by doing a similar job for what is in your own words a 'Competitor'.

Depending on lots of other factors such as your previous disciplinary
record - the size of the company and its procedures your on a sticky wicket to put it mildly.
Sounds like you have given them all the ammunition they need to make your life very difficult indeed.
