I am a sub custodian for a very big school district w/ 50 primary and high schools for 2 years. I've been trying to get a permanent position since May, but every time l called the the hiring dept.when l saw a new opening on the district website, the person who is in charge always had an excuse...(budget cuts, temp only etc.). She said " if any permanent position came she will notify me." No surprised, never did call for anyting. I am so very vigilant about the online district employment page, check almost everyday for openings.
Last week, saw an opened position at one of the school l did sub for a couple months, called her and she said it was "filled" already.!!??
If she said, 1. she 'd call me if anything is available, she didn't call me
2...but WHEN I Called for a brand new positions that was just posted she said it's "filled"....didn't even get the chance to interview.
l can't win here...it looks like l am going to be a sub forever if she's playing this game..I don't if it's legal for a state public school to hire someone internally and post wanted ad at the HR website. It's just mean ,wasting people's time and it's misleading.
At first, l gave her benefit of the doubt, but after a few tries, l began to think she did this on purpose or just being manipulative. I 've have no complaints from teachers/staff/students from all the school l did sub work..and have completed all the assignments she had given me..some thought l was a shoe in for a permanent position.
I don't know who eles to go to since she's the only one in charge of the custodians hiring and giving out sub assignments....can't really confront her tactics or she won't call me for any sub work, also tried contacting the principals at each school,but the secretaries said that l have to contact HR, Principals have no say in hiring except for teachers.
I am at my wit's end, so sick of playing this cat and mouse games w/ her.

write her a letter and send her all your doc. let her know how important it is to you and dont bother her anymore she will think about it and then call you in. I am an HR manager |

Hello,
Do you think she is discriminating against you in some way? Have you tried to contact the school district? Maybe you did something that rubbed her the wrong way. It might be best to look elsewhere for a permanent position since you have the experience. Also you should try the government jobs website www.usajobs.com and look for a government position in your field. Government positions pay well and have great benefits. Good luck! |

I can completely understand how you feel. I have a teaching certfication and cannot find a job (there is NO teaching shortage, but that is another story). The schools here ALWAYS post jobs that are filled. This is because they hire relatives and friends of school employees. I have seen it time and time again. It is horrible. I know quite a few people that did not even have to interview, they were just given the jobs. The worst thing is that many schools here interview people even when they know the job is filled. It has happened to me 3 times that I know of, and that is why I gave up on teaching. Many of the principals here are not permitted to hire, either. Their hands are tied because of the school politics.
I hate to be negative, but I seriously doubt that you will find a permanent job in this district. Like me, you are not "connected." There is nothing we can do; believe me, I have tried and tried. The last straw was when a principal asked to bring me in for an interview and the HR director would not allow it because he had hired his friends.
I suggest you try another district and see if the politics are not as bad. Unfortunately, many schools operate like this. The sad thing is, it is supposed to be a secret because they know it is wrong.
