Harassed at work, should I leave?
|
I have had to take time off work due to people spreading rumours about me and being made to feel unwelcome by a lot of people to the extent that I can't concentrate on my job, a job I do well normally.
I'm signed off for a week and have to see my normal doctor about extending this. My union says I should go ahead with a formal grievance but as Ihave no real allies then I don't think anyone would back me up in my claims even though they know they're true.
Should I look for another job while off and what can I do to keep spirits up in the meantime?

Being bullied at work is an awful experience and any advice given here is easy compared to actually facing the problem. I must agree however with your Union and you should submit a formal grievance. This is for two main reasons.
Firstly, although it is the least line of resistance to leave for another job, this would leave you with unresolved issues that may affect you for some time to come. Mounting a challenge to these people and leaving under your own terms at a later date may be a better course of action in the long term.
Secondly, your Union would be unable to lodge any potential legal challenge on your behalf if the internal processes have not been engaged with. Even if you do not feel you want to pursue a legal challenge at this point, you should perhaps consider that you may change your mind and that also, future actions by your employer may present you with that opportunity.
These situations can be extremely damaging to our well being. The principal cause of this and other stresses is the loss of control we feel. To this end, your challenging the treatment you are receiving is the first step to taking control of the situation and in my experience, people start to get stronger once they have made that first step of submitting a formal complaint.
Get back to your Union and start researching and understanding your employers policies and procedures. You will be surprised how much of that control you can claw back from them! Good luck. |

Rise above it.
Rumourmongers are sad pathetic people who target others to make themselves feel better.
Go to work and do your job as best you can because the coming recession may hinder your chances of finding employment.
The problem lies with them, not you. If they persist in harassing you, it will give you time to gather sufficient evidence for legal action.

Back to work, keep a diary and make a formal complaint.
There is some truth in the adage " the squeaky wheel gets the oil"
In the meantime just enjoy your time off and recharge your batteries for your return.
If you get another sick-line see if the doctor will sign you off with work related depression.
Best of luck

Poseidon is spot on with his advice, however there are a lot of companies that don't do things as they should and you may find that going through a grievance could make the situation worse for you. I have been in this situation and people although were very nice afterwards it was obvious that they were only being that way because they had been told to be. It was so false.
My advice to you is get yourself strong, get some advice first from acas then from your union rep, it wouldn't do you any harm to look for another job in the meantime. You never know a better one may come along. |

You know who really cares what people think or say maybe they are jealous of you some how and they are trying to knock you off-balance so screw them and keep your head down do your job and make friends out of work. |

I don't really know your problem. However if it's really true that some people are harassing you and you have no friends there at your work place, then quickly quit the place and look for another place of work where you will be happy. Remember we should enjoy what we do.
If you continue to work at a place where you are unhappy, your life will be miserable and your health will suffer.
Meantime cheer up. Maybe you can try EFT.

In most of the organisations employees faces these sort of behaviours from their peers/collegaues or even their boss......
AND there is a common funda to tackle these problems.....JOIN, PLAY AND QUIT.
you can join any of the groups exeisted in your company, follow their basic rules support their views n u will be safeguarded.
Make ur own grp. play urself, make ur own rules n regulations, n defend urself,
and if u found that ur colleagues r using ill treatments, n trying to dominate u, n u r nt able to cope dat situation QUIT tht organisation,
Now u hv to decide....in which situation u r currently,.....i will suggest u to quit if situation is nt in ur cntrl, bt before leaving search a new job....PEACE OF UR MIND COMES FIRST!!!!!! |

Use the time to seek establishing your own business; not another dumb job if you can avoid it.
These sorts of things are always going to be occurring at jobs, and why do you want to waste your time and your life there? Insurance? |

Yeah look for another job. They've bullied you and now that they know you're a wuss, they'll continue to do so no matter what charge you press. |
