Harassment at work, please help?

I work at Mcdonalds, and im from india, a manager and i got into a political argument, and it ended with her saying "if you dont like this country, then go back to india." She has said other things that could be taken as a racist remark, she said it like she was saying "if you dont like it here in america, go back to india and be around your own people." I was very offended by this and she told me to leave because i was really angry with her. right before i walked out she said. "good lucky feeding your daughter without a job." So now they want to fire me cause i lost my temper and sweared in the restaurant at 10:30pm when no customers were around. Can they fire me over this even though in my opinion she was cleary being racist and trying anger me even more. Thanks

contact the franchise's office or the corporate office (if it is not a franchised store) and file a complaint.
it is true that you are employed "at-will" but that does NOT mean mean you can be fired for ANY reason, just any legal reason .

the fact that you argued and had a heated debate can/will be held against you but that does not make what this manager did right and the owner/corporation will want to know and deal with the issue.

in the future remember that: "two wrongs don't make a right"!
you must ensure you keep yourself in the right in any situation if you intend to come out on top.

She does sound a bit racist...but, they can also fire you for losing your temper.

A word of advice; dont talk religon and dont talk politics at work! This will always in most cases cause a heated debate! If you notice other people at work discussing dont join in, even if they ask for your opinon. Just say I'm sorry but would like to keep my veiws to myself.

Also I dont know what you said back to her or what you said to get her angry but i dont think they should have fired you for an opinon. You should talk or write a letter to the head boss about the situation so he/she can deal with this manager. This manager should have known better than to get into such a debate. All she could have done is say this is not the place for a disscusion like this so lets just continue to do our job.

You could sue them for this but its not likely to hold up in court. It could be called racists but it then turns into a she said she said argument and will not end up well. If you think you might get fired well be prepared, start looking for another job, it might just be a lot better. Would you want to go back and work for that women. just do your best and good luck.

Yes, they can fire you for any reason whatsoever. (If it's any consolation to you, the owner/corporation will fire your boss, too.)

contact your HR department & file a complaint.

and yes, they likely can fire you anytime with or without cause.

Well it's not like you even gave us the entire story. We don't know what you said to her. If you told her something negative about America or you were criticizing America, then i would understand why she would say something like that. I would say it too. Really, if you don't like this country, then why did you immigrate here in the first place? You had a CHOICE coming to this country, and this country accepted you.

How would you feel if a Canadian man was living in India and was criticizing and insulting India? Wouldn't you tell him to get the hell out also?

But I apologize if you didn't say anything critical of the United States.
