Harrassment at Work?
|
My 19 year old son works for a well known entertainments establishment in the UK. His boss is verbaly harrassing & threatening him & making his life hell at work. What can he do? Additional Details Who can he report it to, it's his boss doing it. If he says anything to the boss, it makes matters worse. His Bank Debit card also went missing & nthing was done about it.

Sorry to hear about this but you need to encourage your son to raise his concern directly to Human Resources Dept. (or Legal Department) for his predicament. Well known establishments usually have a policy written on Code of Professional Ethics. It deals with verbal and non-verbal abuse/harassment and any form of violation done on peer or subordinate. Before HR (or Legal Dept) can do anything about this - your son needs to have written documents to support his claim. A detailed description of when it happened and how it happened, etc. You have to understand that HR will be cautious about this case primarily because they will be dealing with a boss but I am sure they would do something to resolve this.
Pls. tell your son not to tolerate further this abuse and to make sure that he will be strong and firm if investigation and deliberation will take place. |

First, he needs to document the harrassment. Either write down each instance in a notebook, or record the boss on tape.
Second, he needs to contact his superiors about the behavior. He needs to document that this contact was made and the response.
Unless the boss owns the company, he has a superior, even if that superior is at another location. |

Sorry to hear of your son's plight. No one should have to suffer this type of behavior.
You son must keep a journal of all of these verbal harrassments and threats. (Date, time, and what was said.) It is not always possible to record someone doing this, but your son should try. Report all of these situations to the Human Resources department.
If the Boss owns the company, your son should report this situation to the Human Rights Commission. As for the missing Debit Bank Card, this should be reported to the Police.
If all else fails, sometimes getting a new job elsewhere might be more beneficial to your son's health and well-being. I hope everything works out for him.
Good luck. |
