Have my employers acted within the law?

Have my employers acted within the law?

I was sacked from my job last week. I had been in the position for 5 months and was still within my probationary period. I was sacked without any disciplinary procedure taking place, and I always believed you had to have a verbal warning, written warning and final written warning before you could be dismissed. My employers said that as I was still in my probationary period, they didn't have to follow the disciplinary procedure. Is this right? Do I have ANY rights at all?

Sorry, I should add that I'm in the UK.

In the U.S., I believe if you are hired with a specified probation period, your employer can terminate you at will with no cause within that probationary period.

The measures you mention (warnings, procedures, etc) are typical for full-time, permanent employees.

most positions where you have a probation period, you may be fired at will for any reason. they are within their rights.

no you do not. you were an "at-will-employee" and were still in the probationary period. they have a right to "let you go" whenever they want, just as you had a right to quite whenever you wanted. good luck with your next job.

If you agreed to a probabionary period, they are probably in the clear. You should have been given an employee manual with all that spelled out. If not, you can try and go to the local unemployment office. They can help you with figuring out if your firing was appropriate.
