Have you ever been convicted?
|
I am currently on probation for ABI on a family member. This is the first time I've ever been convicted of anything but I'm having a hard time getting a good job once my background check is done. I'm currently employed, so I'm able to survive. Has anyone ever been convicted and been denied employment b/c of that? Did you eventually find a DECENT paying job? Additional Details ABI-Assault w/Bodily Injury. I was arrested and taken to jail, I just went to court in April where I was given probation/community service until Jan of 08. I say convicted b/c when I do community service(trash p/u) on the weekends, sometimes people yell out their windows when they pass us on the highway and call us convicts.

You'll find one dimepiece it just might take a while, Once i worked at an insurance company (with a so called lizard) i'm sure you have heard of them, but they really screen their people i remember i got a job easy there cause i have never been convicted or even got a speeding ticket before. But a couple of my friends who have had felonies, Misdeminors, or over thrown cases would have the toughest time getting on there. But i remember one of my friends he finely got on 2 years later. After working at the worst job he ever had a meat packing plant. So don't loose faith hold on you get one soon just stack your paper as much as you can, You'll get that good job soon. |

What's ABI? It might be the crime instead of being convicted.

OK, here is the deal. You probably already thought this out. Put yourself in the employer's shoes. This doesn't have anything to do with being fair or unfair:
You are working for a big company and you have two people to hire. One is clean and the other one has been convicted of a violent crime. Let's say you hire both.
Three years later the clean one goes nuts and kills 3 coworkers. The company will be sued like always and they may have to spend a million dollars defending and losing the law suit.
On the other hand let's say the one convicted of a violent crime kills 3 coworkers. The company will be sued but this time the attorney will say the person was convicted of a violent crime before. They were convicted and incarcerated because they were not capable of living in a civilized society without hurting others. They had no control over themselves and you, the employer, hired this employee knowing that.
This time the employer pays 100 million instead of 1 million. That employee was a major risk.
Like I say, it's not fair but just "business." So here is what I think would be best for you. Instead of looking at the larger corporations that pay more money, look at the small mom & pop companies.
Living a long time and observing, I have a few thoughts about this. One is that you don't get paid much in a small business, but as it grows and the owners trust your judgment more you start getting paid more and more. Usually after working there for a long time is when you get your real payoff. I just talked to one lady where the owner retired. He gave his business to her. More or less said, you know how to run the company all on your own, so I will give it to you and you give me 10% of the profits until I die. A lot of things like that happens in these small companies. You just have to use good judgment picking the ones that you want to stay with for a long time. You have to be careful though as you will start feeling like they are your mom and dad, but you can't treat them that way. You have to treat them better than their best son or daughter.
Later on in life, I don't see much difference between those that work for a large company and a small company (as long as they stayed with the same one for a long time). You might do better in the long run to try to start your own business, but don't do that until you get your feet on the ground and some experience behind you.
As far as those passing you on the highway and calling you convicts, you know what this is about... it's just kids having fun and shoot off their mouth. Don't start thinking less of yourself as most are not thinking that as they drive by. When I drive by them, I notice the ones that seem to be working hard and the ones that seemed bored out of their mind. The ones that are bored are the ones that I think will eventually end back up in jail sooner or later. |

I have never been convicted, but I once worked in Personnel. Although I personally felt it OK to employ, the management was always the opposite |

If you pled guilty or were found guilty and sentenced even to probation you were convicted of the offense. Some employers check for a criminal record and will deny employment. |

No, I've never been convicted of any crimes. But then again, I've never applied for a job either. Whatever you did to cause harm to the party involved the judge thought that it was serious enough to convict you, but not serious enough to lock you in jail. Question, Have you apologized to the person you hurt? If not then maybe you should if you haven't already. Picking up trash on the side of a road isn't that bad. Because there are criminals in jail and some who are not in jail but should be who have done worse. So, keep your head up, and Good Luck! |
