Have you ever been fired from a job?
Find answers to your legal question.

Have you ever been fired from a job?

Please, do not respond if you've never been fired, and serious replies, only. I want to hear ONLY from those people who HAVE been fired. How did you handle it? How difficult was it to find other employment? I'm also especially interested in responses from those who sit on the other side of the desk; the INTERVIEWERS: How do you deal with someone who admits up front that they were involuntarily terminated from their most recent employment? or any past employment? I've never been fired. But I'm over 50, and it's a long story I'd rather not go into, here. I've got 7 years in my present employment. It's not a job I thought I'd be doing; I have a master's degree in another field. I'd like to leave on good terms, and not be fired.

As an interviewer, I would take into consideration the reason why you were fired, especially since you have been there for seven years. Sometimes it is something not really in that persons control, like management changes and the new manager can't stand you. I have a young man working for me right now, who admitted he was fired from his last job after 3 years, because he lost his only transportation(big issue here). When I called his past employer, to my surprise, they said yes they had to let him go, then gave him a glowing reference! You do not seem happy where you are and I would start looking for a job where your education will do some good.

I was fired. It was a new industry for me and it didn't work out. I went back to doing what I know and enjoy best. I was off work for a year after that, but it was also the recession and I had a nasty non compete. As soon as my non compete was up, I was hired after two days of interviews and had three job offers.

To top it off, I am an HR/recruiter for a living. I've heard of a story that a kid (24 or so) was fired because he tossed a bottle of white out to someone and it nearly hit the boss. The boss was in a bad mood and fired the kid. I don't look at being fired once as something bad. Just a bad decision. Most people that are fired, know it was a bad decision when they started but they went there anyway. That was my experience. People just need to be honest about those situations. Besides, these days, everyone is fired or let go at least once in their career.

If you want to leave on good terms, sit down with your boss and tell him/her your feelings. You may be surprised by the conversation, it could be a very positive experience. The down side of resigning is you may not get unemployment, and you may need it. Maybe you can come up with an exit plan, in which you help them replace yourself and you get time off for interviews.

I recently lost my job and had I not been through rehab and gotten a wonderful new boyfriend who truly loves me, I do not know the pain I would have done to myself. I had a great job- a once in a lifetime chance to teach again - then I told them about my felony and got canned. I got another job and my boss knows about my DUI and how I dont drink anymore but I wake up calling myself a dumbass and the world's biggest idiot. I practice preaching positive thoughts to myself but I do wish I was dead for what an idiot i was. I tell myself someone would have turned me in anyway and it makes life better. What is meant to be? Is God's plan working out for you now whether you like it or not? How will we ever know if what happens was supposed to happen? Were you meant to change paths? Was this meant to be? Think about that - I do every damn day.

If you haven't been fired- find another job and resign!
I have been fired many times. The latest was horrible. I am a hard worker etc blah blah blah. I am about your same age and it is impossible. I have been out of work almost a year. I cannot relocate. It is tough.
