Find answers to your legal question.

Have you ever heard of someone being fired because they took a counterfeit bill?

They fired her because she "could not tell the difference between counterfeit and the real bill"
Additional Details
So do yo think we all should carry those pens around to test the money we get from stores, I am sure it goes back and forth before one can be caught right?

'Randi L' has it correct.......
it is not a matter of taking the counterfeit bill, it is a matter of failing to follow policies and procedures that are in place to prevent this from happening.

what most people don't realize is that when a business takes a counterfeit bill the bank turns it over to the treasury department (secret service) and the business is out the money. once the bills are confiscated the business is out of luck and has to eat the loss. for this reason most businesses have procedures in place, provide test pens and training to prevent these losses.

EDIT:
if you feel the need you can get the pens at any office supply store for a couple of bucks.

if there are policies in place to keep from accepting counterfeit bills, and she failed to follow them, then yes - for failure to follow policy and costing the company money

Cashiers, etc, have an obligation to ascertain that they are presented with real money in payment of bills. Now, if she took standard precautions and the counterfeit so good that she was still fooled, that might be another matter. But cashiers do need to take all of the standard precautions. Now her employer is out $100, plus the merchandise/services, and is in trouble with their bank, Secret Service, etc. And a counterfeiter got away.

Also consider "at will" employment. Anyone can be terminated at any time for any reason or no reason at all.

Most states have an “at-will” employment clause. The long & short of it means that both the employee and employer have the right to break the working relationship that exists between the two. No one would be held liable for quitting or firing. The exception would be if there was a contract in place that would detail just how a person can quit or be fired.
I’m telling you this because it doesn’t really matter why she was fired. It’s time to move on and find the better job that’s waiting for her.
