Wondering if anyone found a good paying job that required a BA degree but not specifically in the job related field (ie they only wanted a degree and didn't care what it was in). If so, what is your degree in and what type of job did you get? How much does it pay? I have a BA in Paralegal and work in a law firm but not as a Paralegal. I'm doing well but just wondering what other options I might have available to increase my salary. Most places require yrs of exp to make any decent money- that's why I feel stuck doing what I do bc I make decent money and if I went for anything else- I don't think I'd make as much. Thanks :)

I don't really qualify to answer this question since I have a BS and a MBA. My BS is in Economics and my MBA is in Marketing, Finance, and International Business and I do none of these things. I work for the Feds doing something completely different than what I set out to be. When I graduated in 2005 (at 24 years old) with my MBA, I didn't know what I wanted to do and what I would even like to do. I got in with the Government because I was able to come up with some really great answers on the 900 interviews I had with them (it really seemed like this much at the time). Also, my mother was completely ecstatic that I was able to get a secure job that I could stay with forever and ever. I didn't have much to any experience in the job they wanted to give me but I showed I had a brain in my head and I was willing to work. It isn't easy to find a job that you really didn't prepare for 4 (or in my case 6) years for. At some point I'd like to leave and make more money doing something I actually went to school for but, like you, more than likely I won't nearly as much as I do now. If money is a huge issue and you can tolerate what you do, I suggest sticking with it until you have experience in something that you can market anywhere and everywhere. If anything, you could always come work for the U.S. Government. They are always looking for some new fresh faces. :-) |

I have a bachelor in History. I had planned on going to grad school to get my masters but at the last minute decided to look around for a full time job. After 3 months I had a job as a Spec. Ed TA, which did not really require any degree. But then I found a job as a case manager for a youth program with state and national government guidelines. This job has nothing to do with my degree and I did not have any previous case management experience but I had a real good interview! I love my job and considering in getting a masters to help this career. |

I don't really have a good answer, but I would go with the money. Why aren't they using you as a paralegal? Sounds like it would be better you of your talents, but never stop looking and let your bosses know that you would like to work in your fiend. But never stop looking, but do keep taking their money. |

I was passionate about helping people & went to school & got my DSW diploma. Worked in the social services field for over 10 years, but for the past 13, have been working from home in Direct Sales.
Love the flexibility, love the income, and am still able to help others build a business, change their life & discover their dreams!
Go figure .... everything in life is really about selling, so it's a breeze to shift into this industry.

I actually have a BA in interpersonal and organizational communication (say that three times fast, lol) and am a paralegal. I actually started out as a secretary but have moved up. Obviously, I get paid more that way, plus I'm with a different firm.
If you have experience doing whatever you're doing, try to find a bigger law firm that has the same position and get in with them. You have experience, plus they are larger so they can afford to pay you more. You may be stuck if your area is small. As far as switching careers entirely, you'll never know until you try. Focus on the strengths you've got from your current position and apply them to the one you want. |
