Having school loans in deferment, can affect a background check for a job?

Dear Cam 'sma':

If you're in deferment, it's because you asked the lender for one, and they granted it. End of discussion.

While employers run background checks, it is ILLEGAL for them to run a credit check on you. Not even if you're a cashier in a bank. That's not part of a background check anyway. It's a separate type of search. They can check to see if you have any convictions involving theft of money or mishandling, but NOT if you have debts. It's none of their business. Background checks include criminal investigations only.

It's also illegal for them to ask you questions during an interview about your credit, whether you rent or own your home, etc. An employer that would ask these questions is not reputable, and you should get up and terminate the interview immediately. You DON'T want to work for somebody like this. They will turn your employment into a form of indentured slavery and take advantage of the fact that you need the money. Steer clear of these types of employers.

Good luck.

No, i had loans in deferment and worked for fortune 500 companies. the company focus was can u do the job, did u lie on your app.

so old boi got it wrong, applied for a job i would deal with selling mutual funds, life ins, other things dealing with folks money and I passed.

now, the question would be, what are u doing? but deferment, just dont spill hot sauce on your app and u should b ok

Deferment or Forebearance? All students who receive student loans through the government are granted a deferment for 6 months immediately following graduation, so I highly doubt this would affect job prospects. Even if it was in forebearance status because of a specific request made by you, I doubt this would negatively affect an employer's decision on whether or not they give you a job. These days everyone has school loans - and they take a long time to pay them off! As long as they aren't in default (as you have stopped making payments without making prior arrangements with your lender) you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
