when you began work you agreed to the rules of the sick leave system. They are asking to be sure you were sick, as many companies frown on using Sick days for Personal time. Depending on the amount of time you were out, however, the company may require a dr.'s note.

they have the right to ask you why and you have the right not to tell them, but they can also let you go for not telling them. Not the answer you wnated but if it is there rules than you have to abide by them.

Personal reasons could be anything from "your cat has fleas" to someone in the family being seriously ill.
You don't have to tell them but they don't have to keep you either.

How bad do you want your job.....if you were really sick your OK......if you lied your fired............

You don't legally have to give them details on what was wrong, but it's fair enough for them to require that you say in writing that you were too ill to come to work. You can't just say "personal reasons" if you called off sick.

Legally, the employer does not have the right to ask you for specific medical information (privacy laws) but they do have the right to ask if you were sick or just calling in to burn a day. Just tell them that you were not feeling well and do not wish to discuss the specific details. They do have the right to ask you for a doctor's note, and if you have an attendance problem this could be their way of checking up.
