Help me with my mom's unemployment issue....PLEASE!?

OK -so my mom was let go from her job at the end of July. She's now on unemployment. She has a 2nd job that she works 3 hours a night like 4 days a week. Unemployment will run out eventually (like in 4 months or so). She's been looking for a job very diligently but hasn't come up with anything that paid like her last job ($13). She was offered a job today for $10. I think she should take it because A JOB is better than no job. She doesn't think she should take it because she won't be able to afford herself. I think she can let Cable tv go....

It's like I'm not giving her the answers she wants to hear so I figured I'd post and see what others have to say. I've said things to her like, "in this economy - a job is better than no job" - and sometimes it's easier to find a job if you already have a job. By the way - she's in her middle 50's and she knows office work. Receptionist, Office stuff but not managerial. To me, it's hard to start out at $13 being a receptionist - she would need to do more. I told her to call them back and tell them she'd take it if they could possibly start her at $11?? Nothing I say makes sense to her and I don't even know if I'm right.

Please comment on what you think she should do. Take the job or keep looking? Thanks, the daughter

if she is offered the job and fails to accept it she can be denied continued benefits.
if the pay is significantly less then she was making she can take the job and still draw partial benefits. not only is to her advantage to take the job but it is required by law.

if she fraudulently continues to draw benefits (refusing work is fraud) she can be made to pay back the funds as well as face penalties and a two year ban of any future benefits.

I recommend taking the $10 job while continuing to look for something better.

I think she should take it. If this is a receptionist position, companies generally won't pay more than $10/hour unless you have some specialized skills that are above the position.
I'm an admin asst. In my area for a company the size of my employer the going rate is $8/hr. I get several dollars more than that because I have the computer skills to double as an IT person.

This is a a dilemma my wife and I had until recently when she recently started a new job after losing her old one. Luckily my income was enough to keep the both of us afloat, but it you two can make due with what you have and have the luxury of a little time, I think that holding out for something higher paying is fine as long as you are not being too greedy and asking for more than what you're worth.

If your situation warrants income immediately that I agree with you, take what you can get in these woeful economic times.

Definitely take the job. The odds she'll find a job meeting her specifications are very slim. The odds are far better, however, that she'll run out of unemployment before she finds her perfect job.

Definitely have to get her to re-prioritize. If she can't pay her bills, TV and internet have to go, no more name brand foods from the store, trade in a higher car payment for a lower one.

Make sure you tell her that you know she's worth $13/hour and even more. Most people are worth more than their starting wages, but employers won't know that until they start. It takes a strong person to accept a job you know you're over-qualified for and then get underpaid. Then things like economic crisis' happen and companies can't afford to give raises to good employees. That's just the cycle.

She should definitely take it though.

Id say do odd jobs like baby sitting from certain hours and days and then go to monster.com or some other website that automatically finds jobs that have not been filled yet.
