HOW DO YOU DO A BACKGROUND CHECK?

Not only is it legal to do a background check, it is stupid not to do it. You can make up your own application form. to get good employees, schedule an interview with each applicant, make a background check and be sure you pay well. If you pay too little, you will get what you pay for.

Don't take this the wrong way, but the problem isn't the employees or candidates - the problem is you.

You need to be sure that you are conducting a good interview and doing a background check, but what you do after that will dictate if people do their work. How do you train them? How are they supervised on the job? Are you paying competitive rates for your location? An employment application is a nice idea, but it won't do anything more that a good interview will to prevent you from hiring bad employees.

Employees who are engaged in their work and enjoy what they are doing will perform well for you. This is not something that you can interview for - it is the environment you create. You need to make sure you are not hiring criminals of course, but the backgound check will not fix your problem. Spend some time talking to your good employees and figure out what makes them good. Then be sure to evaluate candidates for the same qualities. Once they are on-board, make sure you have a good training and follow-up program.

There are plenty of application templates on line. Don't ask applicants for their age or their social security number on an application.

During the interview process, ask behavior-based questions that are not likely to lead to "yes" or "no" answers. Example: tell me about a time you had to deal with an angry customer. How did you handle it?

Once you have made a decision, make a job offer contingent upon successful completion of a background screen and reference check. There are plenty of background check services online. My former employer used backgroundchecks.com. The larger companies can help you with compliance issues, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Check out Microsoft's templates: http://office.microsoft.com There are plenty of employment applications there.

Background checks are perfectly legal - there are companies that you can pay to conduct them for you (as well as drug screening).

My brother does background checks all the time. Its legal Sometimes you may need to change your mind about one standard though when possible and consider hiring a mildly handicapped person or a person who has been unable to attain their Ged depending on what you want them to do.Ive never stolen but Im suffering from a math related form of dyslexia.Do you know how hard the math is on that test? Last week I applyed to be a waitress making 2.25 an hour and they wanted a high school diploma! No joke.Honest people may have a low education or be poor because being honest goes back to morals.I was raised in church but that wont get me a job.Talk to people everywhere you go and hire a good candidate regardless of race or education whenever possible and you may find more honest employees.Give people with handicaps and disabilitys a chance so long as you can do it and you may find more employees who are just so thrilled to be given a chance.Treat them good sometimes we are very loyal.

Make up a application with the information you need, but remember it is illegal to ask their age. Ask for full name, address, telephone, schooling, previous employment, and reason for leaving. You also have to ask for their social security number, and make sure they are legal in the states. I would call their previous job, and ask them what their work performance was. Some places can not tell you a lot , but they can tell you if they would hire that person again. You can ask why they left their previous employment. Have face to face interviews and see how they carry themselves. in the interview.
