How can I become a certified paralegal?
Find answers to your legal question.

How can I become a certified paralegal?

I've been a legal assistant for about 10 years but I am knowledgable and qualified enough to be a paralegal. I graduated high school but never attended college. I'd like to become a certified paralegal. I know to become certified I have to go back to school but I dont even know where to start or anything. How would I go about this and how long might it take to become certified.
Additional Details
BTW, I live in Southern California.

Every state has different requirements. Here in Michigan, there are several community colleges and universities that have paralegal programs where you earn a paralegal certificate. Your best bet is to find a college or university in your state that has an ABA-approved paralegal training program. The good news is many colleges and universities will give you college credit for certain courses based on job experience, so you may not have to take all the courses.

To give you an idea: My wife started the paralegal program at Oakland University (ABA-approved) in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in education. She only had to take 24 credit hours worth of courses and do an internship to get her certificate. Again, in your case, since you have a legal background you may not have to do the internship.

"Certification" is really not worth the paper it is printed on. Law office employers today want employees with degrees - preferably a bachelors.

WARNING: Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!! This is NOT a good field to invest in right now!!! Reasons: very bad economy, many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work thanks to the WWWeb, there are WAY TOO MANY law schools in the USA churning out WAY TOO MANY graduates to be supported by our country - so even if you do graduate, you probably won't be able to find a job.

Suggestion: Go into the field of Healthcare <<< LOTS of jobs there!!! even with your background.

Good luck.
