YMY has it right. Just ask nicely and explain that you need time to wrap things up - it is the professional thing to do. Your new employer should understand, if they tell you no, then you have a decision to make. |

Just say it as is:
"in good business practice,
I feel I must give my current employer the conventional 2 week notice.
I hope that you will approve this request; since I truly want to work for you and this company ". |

You don't have to give a two week notice, if you don't want to. Depends why your are leaving.
You work for yourself, you never will work for someone else. You are your own employer. You are the master of your own ship.
Now if you want to work again for the previous employer, then give a two week notice, in case this job works out.
I really don't know your specifics. You are an at will employee, they can fire you at any time. You can leave at any time. So tit for tat. |

Although ORD1226 is right that you work for yourself it is NEVER a good idea to burn bridges with former employers. People know people and they talk. (The HR community is smaller than you think and odds are the new HR department knows someone is the old HR department). It is best to give 2 weeks notice as a courtesy to your current employer and it shows your new employer that you are mature enough to think of others.
The new employer will understand. This is a common practice. |
