How can I let my bosses know that I deserve a raise?
Find answers to your legal question.

How can I let my bosses know that I deserve a raise?

I am the receptionist and secretary for two different attorneys. I am the receptionist for one and I also help out the secretaries with their filing. For the other one, I am the secretary/assistant and notary public. I've been working in the lawfirm for 7+ months from now and since I started 'til now, I've been paid the minimum wage which is $6.75. I think I deserve a raise because I am becoming a multi-task in this lawfirm. What do you guys think?

First of all, I think I would wait until I'd been there a full year. But at that point, I'd document my workload, the responsibilities I'd taken on over the year. Also, any special projects that you might have done. Then schedule an appointment with both of them to discuss your value to the firm and how much that value is worth.

Multi-tasking is what it's all about. Welcome to the real world. If you get a raise it will be due to time, not the fact you are multi-tasking.

Never ask for a raise before your one-year is up.

7 months is nothing.

Filing is nothing, a notory is a signature and a stamp. Answering phones and taking messages is really nothing.

Not trying to knock you job, but you are NOT a legal secretary...a minimum wage is paid to people that do menial tasks. EVERYONE multi-tasks at EVERY job.

I think you may have a good thing going for later, wait until you one-year and when you ask for the raise, be sure to inform them that you are willing to do MORE work.

If you don't, it will sound like you have a sense of self-entitlement...that is the vibe I'm getting from your post.

go for it. just tell them exactly what you said in that paragraph. be confident and don't act as if you're questioning your motives for a raise.

I suggest you spend time preparing some good reasons why you deserve a raise. Multi-tasking is really a given now and not alone sufficient reason for a raise. Good reasons may be dedication to your work, long hours, quality of your work, being a quick learner and able to work effectively for two lawyers handling each of their priorities. Once you have reasons politely ask your bosses to give you a raise. If they deny a raise, ask them what you would have to do to get one and then go from there. Good luck!

It's early to ask for more money. You accepted this position at that wage. Generally you don't get a pay increase until you have completed a year. However, at that point be prepared. Do your homework and find out what other attorneys are paying for similar positions.

Then present your case for what you believe you should be paid. Be professional, non-emotional, and tactful and you could be awarded a significant increase.

Do you enjoy your job? Do you come to work everyday? If you enjoy the work and you are happy then stay, be patient - 7 mo. is not a long time. Try to learn all you can, ask if the company will pay to send you to school - go if you can, if they say no at least you asked.
