i want to be a lawyer and im only 12 how can i practice now without joining the debate club because of the summer
thank you!!!

At 12.. your best practice is to enjoy your summer while interacting with your friends. While you do that learn to listen to people.. learn to understand what people really mean and what they really want to say.
Learn to see BOTH sides of an arguement or a discussion - that will help you to present YOUR side even better.
Learn that passion and justice are not always co-partners
Learn that the law is not about winning or losing but about persuasion and presentation of accepted principles that support what you believe is correct.
BUT.. most important ....enjoy your summer.. you can not possibly realize it but you only have a few of them left. (The concept of a 'Last Summer' is one where you have absolutely no serious obligations or responsibilies.. something that changes around the end of high school). A lot will change for you in the next 4 years or so.

well, you don't have to join the debate club, but I highly recommend it as it will teach you things like Logical Fallacies and such that you will need for the LSATs.
I'm not sure how much "practice" you can do at twelve. I mean, it's never too early to start studying law. So you can do that. Another thing you can do is get involved with your school's peer mediation program (if there is one) and help mediate arguments between students. Another thing you can do is try to volunteer in a lawyer's office or at a courthouse. Honestly, I think once you are in highschool, you will be able to do more.

If your parents don't object, you could watch the newscasts on Court TV. Much of it is too graphic for a twelve year old so please don't be angry if they say no. If you can, try to catch the Nancy Grace News Show. She is a very classy lady lawyer with an attitude towards crime. If you can't do that, watch old movies on tv and try to present arguments to both sides of any issue that arises. Go to the library and read a law book. There are many fields of law to go into... |

learn as much as you can about how our government, mainly the judicial system, works.
go to court, you're allowed to sit in on court proceedings at the local courthouse.
See if you can "work" in a lawyer's office a few times a week, filing paperwork, typing, etc. If your parents have a friend who's a lawyer, that would be best.
