How can you get a new job when you are not on good terms with your former employer?

How can you get a new job when you are not on good terms with your former employer?

I informed my boss that i would be leaving in 4 months to move and follow my fiance to his new job in arizona, which is across the country. she got very upset and immediately fired me! i was turned down for unemployment because of her, and now every time i interview for a new job i am told that my previous employer gave me an extremely bad reference and that they did not want to hire me because of it.

it is a small privately-owned restaurant and i worked there for 2 years, so i feel obligated to list her as my most recent employer and she is always inevitably phoned for a reference. i have been looking for jobs both where i live now and for prospective jobs to where i will be moving, but i wont be getting to my new home until this summer. i feel as though i gave my boss adequate notice and i had never had any complaints from her before i told her of my plans.

what should i do? my former boss is making it impossible for me to survive. i can't collect unemployment and she refuses to give me a good reference for a new job. im so stuck, please help! :(

There's a few things you can do.

1. You can talk to her. Try reasoning with her. Never works with situations like these, but it's good to do to show that you're the better person when you have to do things the hard way.

2. You can choose to leave her out of your resume. You don't HAVE to put her on it.

3. You can plainly and honestly say what happened. You can say that you worked at the restaurant for 2 years and you gave 4 months notice and she fired you on the spot for it and that she shouldn't be called for a reference. The fact that you were there for 2 years says that you were worth keeping around.

4. You can find out exactly what she's saying about you and slap her with a slander suit. She would have to pay out a bunch of money for all the time you're unemployed if you can prove what she is saying is inaccurate. It's damaging your reputation and if she can't prove what she's saying, she's breaking the law.

5. You could threaten to dig up any dirt on her. Every restaurant has their unlawful practices. Talk to her about it and say that if she keeps slandering you, you'll report whatever her practices are. If you worked there for 2 years, you should have a couple tidbits.

(headgirl97 pointed out that 5 can open up a huge can of worms and make the situation worse. This is why i left it for number five and should only be used if everything else has failed. 5 is one of those "Do at your own risk" answers that could work well for you or could make things a lot worse.)
