I am a Law student in London and I know that competition is high. But what do those people that get training contracts and vacation schemes have that we dont? I have really good grades and lot of experience in may things like debating etc etc, even acting. Is luck a factor?

VERY, VERY, VERY difficult. Jobs here in the USA in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is not a good field to invest time and/or money in.
We simply have WAY TOO MANY Lawyers - we have a GLUT of ATTORNEYS!!!
Here in the USA, you need to have a mommy or a daddy that is the senior partner of a law firm to be considered.
Can't you find a job in London? I would stay in London. There are NO jobs here in the USA. The market/economy is SATURATED with way too many Legal Professionals.
