How do I apply for law jobs?

How do I apply for law jobs?

I work in an office and have a few computer certificates. I have become interested in a job that's related with law. I have just completed a certificate in legal studies and continuing my studies part time so that one day I hope to have a degree. I was wondering what kind of jobs I can look into that are law related? It would be good to have a job that's related to my studies. I don't mind if it isn't high paying, as I wouldn't even mind if it just involved answering telephones at a police station, type thing. I don't know how I'm supposed to find out about what kind of jobs there are or where to look for them.

It sounds like you are on the right path. You have the certifications which legal employers LOVE and you have a legal studies certificate which is great. Most secretaries don't have that. I'll list some things below that are vital to being a legal secretary/assistant and/or paralegal:

1. Typing. I don't know about 80wpm, but 60wpm is a MUST.
2. Ability to multi-task and do it well. You must be able to handle many tasks at once and make very few mistakes.
3. Ability to handle stress. The legal field is deadline driven and can become quite stressful at times. You need to be able to prioritize and not take things personally.

As far as the types of jobs you could do, they are really limitless with the certifications you have.

1. Legal Secretary (best paying other than a paralegal). When I was a Legal Secretary in Dallas I was making $22/hour
2. Paralegal - You will need either a Bachelor's Degree or an Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies, plus obtain your Paralegal certification
3. Clerk at the Courthouse
4. Anything in law enforcement

Really, it's up to you what you want to do. But corporate defense firms pay much higher than smaller plaintiff's firms. The down side to large firms is that A) they demand experience and perfection and B) the hours can be lengthy.

You could try getting a job as a legal secretary or a paralegal specialist, but be warned: Law firms want legal secretaries and paralegals with experience, and in order to be a legal secretary you really need to be able to type at least 80 words per minute. It's very difficult to get in unless you have an "in" at a law firm with someone you know or a friend of a friend. If you're looking for full-time employment, you could try getting a job with the state or the Federal Government. Part-time work is going to be a lot more difficult to find. If law is definitely the way you want to go, finish your bachelors degree and go to law school. There are a lot more jobs for lawyers than there are for paralegals, and the pay is better (unless you work for the state or Federal Government).
