How do I become a Paralegal?
Find answers to your legal question.

How do I become a Paralegal?

I've been looking into becoming a Paralegal as a possible career path. However, all of the positions i've looked into so far require at least 1 year of experience in the field. How do I get this experience? I'm still a student in college, so would it be possible to get some kind of part time job or internship at a law firm to get experience? Also, would any of you recommend taking a Paralegal certificate program after I graduate?

Actually the internships will help to improve your total learning experience in a planned manner, so that you gain the required experience even while studying.
Please take a paralegal certificate after graduation and this will help you to function more effectively as a paralegal.

You should definitely get a part time job at a law office to start gaining legal experience. Look for clerk or legal secretary positions. These positions generally do not require any experience.

As for a paralegal certificate.....that may not be a good idea for you. Unless you live in a really small town where practically anyone can get a paralegal job, a certificate will not help qualify you for a paralegal position. Are you in college right now obtaining a BA? If so, once you graduate you may consider looking into some American Bar Association (ABA) accredited certificate programs (trust me, you only want to get a paralegal education from an ABA approved school). A BA combined with an ABA approved certificate and legal experience will definitely qualify you for a paralegal position.

However, if you are not getting your BA then a certificate will not be a good move for you. If you are getting your AA or are just taking some classes, look into getting your AA in paralegal studies (from an ABA approved school). An AA in paralegal studies combined with legal experience should qualify you for a paralegal position.

See, there are many different routes to the same goal. What you should do just depends on where you are at now.

Here's a link to browse ABA approved schools: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/

Getting an internship or a part time job during college is an excellent way to get 1 year of experience. It would be very possible. Ask your career services department or your academic adviser for help in locating internships etc. I would take the paralegal cert program now instead of going back for it. Take a few less electives and tack it on. Depending on the kinds of firms you are interested in working for it may or may not be required. I worked in a small town law office as a paralegal with no certificate, but if I wanted to move into bigger offices, I think they would have looked for some kind of certification or course completion.
