How do I get a secretarial job with no experience while I am still in school?
|
I am in college attempting to become a paralegal. It is my first year in college, and I have no secretarial experience. I would like to get a job at a law firm as a legal secretary or receptionist. I can type 60 WPM, and I am efficient in using Word Office, Excel, and Power Point. Do you think any law firm will give me a chance? What should I say in my resume?

It is vital that you gain experience.
Why not try an employment agency for general office experience, you can pick and choose what work and hours you do.
In your resume, stress that you have always had an interest in this type of work and that you are excited about using your college skills.
I just wonder whether you want to be a typist, or a secretary who will need far wider skills to manage a more complex job.

They will def. give you a chance. More likely in a bigger city you will have more open doors. They may hire you on as something less than a secretary job, but at least you will be in the atmosphere. I would make the resume look good at your skills and def. make it a point that you are going to school for that industry and make a cover letter that expresses you want to get your foot in the door at a reputable firm and get some experience behind you. |

I agree with the previous poster you should be able to get a chance at a firm. Granted it may take you a while but don't give up.
In your cover letter tell them that although you are in school and don't have much experience you love a challenge and you would be an asset to them.
I did this when I first graduated from Paralegal school and it took me 4 interviews before someone would take a chance on me. Now I have graduated from Law School and I am waiting on the results of the Bar exam.
Good luck. |
